October 10, 2012Exercise from Josef Albers preliminary course 1929 – 30.
Collage of patterned wallpaper.
Bauhaus Bouquet. Sharon Elphick.
One of my favourite exhibitions this year has to be Bauhaus: Art as Life, held at the Barbican from May to August. A piece that really caught my eye was by Monica Bella Ullman-Broner. The wallpaper collage (pictured above) was an exercise from Josef Albers’ preliminary course and was created between 1929 – 1930. I loved the simplicity of the idea and how effective it was, it also appealed to my love of pattern. Inspired and armed with compass and scalpel I set about creating a series of floral collages based on the same exercise. ‘Bauhaus Bouquet’ is one such collage in the series and the first to be released as a limited edition print. The print is £80, is an edition of 30 and measures 27cm x 19.5cm. Available from this weekend at Columbia Road. It will also be available online over the next couple of days.
New Collages by Sharon Elphick
October 10, 2012In the Summer I found three 1970′s interior magazines at Spitalfields Antique Market. There’s something about the colours, patterns and even the smell of the magazines that I find inspiring. I started on a series of collages using the pages for backgrounds, shapes and floral arrangements with a view to show them at Columbia Road.
Somehow things got in the way (school holidays), in the main, so I never quite produced as many as I’d hoped. However, rather than wait until I have a larger body of work, I’ve decided to show them now. I took these two to the framers today and I am expecting them back next week. They may also be available as limited edition prints so keep an eye out on the shop www.elphicksshop.com

October 4, 2012Seasonal Etchings by Sharon Elphick
October 3, 2012I started working on this plate at The Prince’s Drawing School back in 2008. Recently I decided to work on a set based on the seasons and for some reason squirreled them away. Maybe it was the arrival of Autumn that made me think of them again and put them in the window at Columbia Road. They had such a lovely response last weekend, that I’ve decided to share them here too. They are available to purchase as individual seasons or as a set of four right here.

November 17, 2011Optical Owls
November 3, 2011‘Optical Owls’ is a new drawing by Sharon Elphick for an exhibition to be held at the Mill Co. Project in London. ‘Collectionistas’ is an exhibition curated by Kavel Rafferty and will showcase artworks by several artists who are inspired by collecting. I have a fascination with birds, in particular owls and I have amounted quite a number of ceramics based on our fine feathered friends. This drawing shows some of my favourites. The drawing will be recreated as a Risograph in an edition of 30 and will be on display from November 26th. I’ll post more information soon.
