On the Head

May 5, 2009

I am busy putting together images for my online store which should be up and running real soon. This is one of my favourite images by Julie Westbury, titled ‘On the Head No.4’. It is an original collage with cuttings from vintage National Geographic Magazines.  We have lots more here at Elphick’s at £118 each.

Christmas Window

November 24, 2008

Here is Elphick’s Christmas window in preparation for ‘Christmas Wednesdays’, a special event hosted by the independent retailers in and around Columbia Road. You can find out about the event here. This event is not to be missed and gives you the opportunity to buy your Christmas gifts without the hassle of the high street. We will be open on Wednesday 3rd, 10th and 17th of December between 5pm and 9pm and on Saturday 20th from 10am til 4pm. The Madonna in the window is by Julie Westbury and is created with vintage postcards of Margate.

Julie Westbury

I met Julie in 1986 when she taught me textiles at West Sussex College of Art and Design and we have stayed in contact ever since.

On a visit to Julie’s home in Ramsgate with my daughter, she showed me these amazing collages which I now sell at Elphick’s.

In the first image, which is one of a series of collages called ‘The 3 Pearl Necklaces’ Julie’s photograph ‘Ramsgate Sands’ is recreated as a postcard and repeated and manipulated in such a way that ordinary objects in the picture like the post box and the concrete bollards, magically become red ribbons and a string of pearls.

In the second image ‘Ramsgate Red Ribbon’ a slightly different placement of the same photograph gives a totally different effect.

They remind me of the fractal images you see when looking down a kaleidoscope.

The last image is the photograph ‘Ramsgate Sands’.
