reddot(web)Sharon Elphick. ‘Red Dot’

Day two, postcard number two. I’m not exactly sure what is going on here but I’m having fun. Trying not to think too much, just see what happens. It will be interesting to see them all together at the end of the week, in fact I better get my skates on otherwise there will be no chance of completing 10!

Monday Challenge!

bookishbuilding(web)Sharon Elphick. ‘Bookish Building’.

So, I’ve st myself a challenge to create 10 original collages at postcard size by the end of this week. These will then be available for sale at £65 each on Friday. Please keep a look out at http://www.elphicksshop.com. This is the first, it kind of looks like a building but it’s actually a collage of book shelves taken from a 1963 publication called ‘The Art of Interior Decoration’ by Hachette.

Change.

So, I was a little shocked to see that my last blog post was nearly a whole year ago! I’m not sure if anyone visits here anymore but fingers crossed this might reach someone, and maybe inspire.

A lot has changed this past year. Elphick’s is no longer a retail space on Columbia Road but we still have the online shop, where you can buy affordable prints by some of your favourite artists.

We are now located in Hackney Wick, in the Bridget Riley Studios on Dace Road. I’m already loving it on ‘Fish Island’ and it’s great to be surrounded by so many creative people.

The new studio space, and not having a retail space is giving me the time and inspiration to create my own work again, which I am extremely excited about. I’ve only been here a few days and I’ve already made three postcards which are up for auction to raise money for the Hepatitis C Trust.

I will post more new work as it happens. Have a great day.

Is it Just Me or is This the Way Love is Supposed to Be.

We’ve been selling Russell’s work since 2009, following a tip off from a couple of friends who’d seen his debut show ‘Tales from a Park Bench’ in Camden.

Always a successful staple at Elphick’s, Russell’s attribution of emotions to animals has appealed to me and customers alike.

The thought provoking text evokes powerful emotions, which are often funny, touching and sometimes shocking.

His work combines illustration and collage with found ephemera, which is often housed in vintage frames.

The new works are available in-store at Columbia Road and a run of limited edition prints are available online.

Bauhaus Bouquet

Monica Bella Ullman-Broner.

Exercise from Josef Albers preliminary course 1929 – 30.

Collage of patterned wallpaper.

Bauhaus Bouquet. Sharon Elphick.

One of my favourite exhibitions this year  has to be Bauhaus: Art as Life, held at the Barbican from May to August. A piece that really caught my eye was by Monica Bella Ullman-Broner. The wallpaper collage (pictured above) was an exercise from Josef Albers’ preliminary course and was created between 1929 – 1930. I loved the simplicity of the idea and how effective it was, it also appealed to my love of pattern. Inspired and armed with compass and scalpel I set about creating a series of floral collages based on the same exercise. ‘Bauhaus Bouquet’ is one such collage in the series and the first to be released as a limited edition print. The print is £80, is an edition of 30 and measures 27cm x 19.5cm. Available from this weekend at Columbia Road. It will also be available online over the next couple of days.

New Collages by Sharon Elphick

October 10, 2012

1970. Sharon Elphick.

Flower Face. Sharon Elphick.

In the Summer I found three 1970’s interior magazines at Spitalfields Antique Market. There’s something about the colours, patterns and even the smell of the magazines that I find inspiring. I started on a series of collages using the pages for backgrounds, shapes and floral arrangements with a view to show them at Columbia Road.

Somehow things got in the way (school holidays), in the main, so I never quite produced as many as I’d hoped. However, rather than wait until I have a larger body of work, I’ve decided to show them now. I took these two to the framers today and I am expecting them back next week. They may also be available as limited edition prints so keep an eye out on the shop www.elphicksshop.com

Say what you see! I have no idea what this piece is called but I was delighted when I discovered this magazine at Spitalfields Antique Market today. After a little research on the internet, I found out that the illustration was by Günther Stiller.  Love it.
